Stephen Butler Brown, age 78, of Norwood, MA, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, September 14, 2023, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease and various complications. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Ellie) and his brother Jeffrey of El Paso, TX. Steve has three children: Philip of Sonderborg, Denmark, Matthew of Tombstone, AZ, and Becky of London (UK) and Dubai. He has seven grandchildren ranging in age from 20 years old to 6.
Steve was born in 1945 in Newton, MA and grew up in Arlington, MA. He attended Arlington Public Schools, Tufts University, Yale University School of Music, and The Ohio State University where he received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in 1979.
During his music teaching and performing career, Steve taught at Alfred University in Alfred, NY, Louisiana College in Pineville, LA, and Murray State University in Murray, KY. During his 30 years of teaching in Kentucky, Steve served as Chair of the Keyboard Unit, President of the Kentucky Music Teachers Association, and the national coordinator of the Chamber Music Competitions for the Music Teachers National Association.
Steve had two very serious “hobbies”: researching his family genealogies that traced his ancestors back for many generations and hundreds of years. Second, but by no means less avidly, he loved to listen to and watch opera productions.
